The Blackhawk Standard

Traditional Training Without the Smoke & Mirrors.

Blackhawk TaeKwonDo was built around a simple idea: put the student, the family and the art first. Our curriculum is rooted in traditional TaeKwonDo and developed through decades of training, teaching and competition. It is not a generic third party program.

Our culture is guided by both the five Tenets of TaeKwonDo and the U.S. Army Core Values. Courtesy, integrity, perseverance, self control and indomitable spirit are reinforced by loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity and personal courage. Together, they help define how we train, lead and expect students to carry themselves on and off the mat.

Real ProgressAdvancement reflects effort, consistency and readiness.
Practical ApplicationStudents understand how technique applies beyond sport.
Separate Adult ClassesAdults train for adult goals, not as an afterthought.

Questions Parents and New Students Ask About Taekwondo

Answers to common questions about starting Taekwondo at Blackhawk TaeKwonDo in Carpentersville.

Do I need martial arts experience?

No. Most students begin Blackhawk TaeKwonDo with little or no previous martial arts experience, and that is exactly what our beginner instruction is designed for. You do not need to know how to kick, punch, stretch, bow or follow Taekwondo terminology before your first class.

New students are taught step by step and are never expected to keep up with someone who has been training for years. Grandmaster Anthony Iannone and Master Cristina Iannone personally teach the classes and make sure each student understands the fundamentals before moving forward.

For children, the focus begins with listening, coordination, confidence, discipline and learning how to follow the structure of class. For adults, training starts at the individual’s current ability level and builds technique, conditioning, mobility, confidence and practical self defense over time.

You also do not need to get in shape first. Training is designed to help you improve as you go. The most important things to bring to your first class are a willingness to learn, a positive attitude and the consistency to keep showing up.

Blackhawk TaeKwonDo welcomes beginners looking for traditional Taekwondo training in Carpentersville, and our One Week Trial gives you a chance to experience the school before making a longer term decision.

What should I wear to the first class?

Wear comfortable, modest clothing that allows you to move freely.

  • A T shirt and athletic pants are ideal.
  • Bring a water bottle.
  • A Taekwondo uniform is not required for your first class.

For safety and respect in the dojang, please do not wear shorts, tank tops, yoga pants, leggings, low cut tops or other clothing that is revealing, excessively tight or inappropriate for a family training environment.

Can parents watch?

Yes. Blackhawk TaeKwonDo has a dedicated Parent Lounge and Visitor Lounge where parents can comfortably watch their children train. The seating area was designed specifically for observing class and gives parents a place to relax, socialize with other families and stay connected to what their child is learning. The lounge also displays Blackhawk TaeKwonDo history, certifications and credentials so visitors can learn more about the school while they watch class.

Do adults train with children?

No. At Blackhawk TaeKwonDo, adults and children train in separate classes because they have different goals, learning styles and training needs. Children benefit from classes designed around focus, coordination, confidence, discipline and age appropriate development. Adults need a training environment centered on strength, conditioning, mobility, stress relief, practical self defense and adult level instruction.

Keeping the classes separate allows each group to train at the right pace and receive instruction that is relevant to them. It also gives adults dedicated time to focus on their own training without distraction, while children receive instruction designed specifically for their age and stage of development.

How does the One Week Taekwondo Trial work?

Our One Week Taekwondo Trial is a zero pressure way to experience Blackhawk TaeKwonDo in Carpentersville and see whether our school is the right fit for you or your child. Adults can experience our traditional Taekwondo training firsthand, while parents can see how their child responds to the structure, expectations and environment of our kids and teen classes.

For children, we take an extra step to make the first class comfortable. New students are partnered with a student mentor who welcomes them, helps them understand what is happening during class and stays with them throughout the experience. This gives new students someone familiar to follow and helps them feel included from the moment they step onto the floor.

Whenever possible, we like new students to begin on a Monday rather than in the middle of the week. Starting at the beginning of the week gives students a more complete experience, helps establish a routine and makes it easier to begin building the consistency that is an important part of Taekwondo training.

The trial also gives us an opportunity to get to know each student. Blackhawk TaeKwonDo is built around respect, discipline, effort and a positive training environment, so we want to make sure the school is a good fit in both directions. Our goal is to create a place where students, families and the Masters can train together with the right attitude and expectations.

There is no pressure to enroll at the end of the trial. We want you to experience Blackhawk TaeKwonDo, ask questions and make a confident decision about whether our Carpentersville Taekwondo school is the right place for you or your family.
